What Makes Manchester The Best City

Most of you probably don’t need too much persuading when it comes to claiming Manchester as the UK’s best city! However, with London getting much of the attention reserved for cities in the UK, it’s necessary to stop and consider all of the many, many reasons why which Manchester should be celebrated. The most liveable city in the UK (and that’s official) has an incredible amount to offer both tourists and potential residents. Here are just a few of the reasons why people may want to consider packing up and heading North to Manchester:

First on everyone’s list is food. It is life’s fuel and Manchester has a lot of it to power you through all of your days. With such a diverse population, you can imagine the choices you’d have in terms of choosing a place to eat. From Arabic mezze to Mexican burritos, and of course the famous Curry Mile- everything you can imagine is at your doorstep, and it’s delicious.  If you fancy something a little simpler Manchester is home to some of the best chip shops in the world, along with cafes where you are sure to get some of the best black pudding and full English’s of your life. Whether you’re looking for high-end and fancy cuisine by some of the best chefs the UK has to offer, or an Eccles cake with a cuppa- Manchester has you covered.

After you’ve filled yourself up with some world-class cuisine, you’re probably going to want to experience some of Manchester’s top-notch culture. People come from all edges of the earth come to study in some of the world’s finest institutions of higher education. Manchester University Alumni holds some pretty impressive names including actor Benedict Cumberbatch, physicist Brian Cox, mathematician Alan Turing and composer and writer Anthony Burgess. With access to education comes access to a whole trove of cultural experiences. Museums, theatres, and architecture make Manchester one of the finest places to explore, whether you come as a student or on your own accord, you will not be bored for a single second. The Manchester Museum, Manchester Art Gallery, The Museum of Science and Industry, and the Lowry are all great places to start on your cultural tour of Manchester. Better leave plenty of room in your schedule.

Once you’ve spent up all of your mental energy touring the many museums and landmarks, you can spend a little time and money in the fantastic variety of shops the city center has to offer. There are options for everyone’s budget with high street shops at your disposal at Arndale center and designer stores available on New Cathedral Street. You will not be at a loss for retail options. If you are more on the edgy side there are places for you too! Manchester has a load of boutique options and even a few thrift shops that offer a wide range of reasonably priced and quirky items. You are sure to find whatever you need, while also having a lot of fun with your friends. The diverse array of shops is also made apparent by the diversity of people you see in the street- personal style and individuality is a big deal in Manchester.

Finally, one of the greatest selling points to potential residents of Manchester is that employment is readily available. So many people are beginning to shun the capital in favor of searching for jobs in Manchester. It is far easier and more worth your while to get a job in this Northern metropolis than in crowded London. You are also more likely to have a short commute and a better general quality of life. The economy is the fastest growing in all of Britain, which is huge in terms of industry and the potential for further growth.

We can’t discuss the best things about Manchester without mentioning perhaps its best asset- the people! Mancunians are known for their sense of humour which make be wry and a little cutting at times- but we know how to make a joke, and take a joke! Manchester has also given the world some pretty incredible people from all parts of life- Emmeline Pankhurst the leader of the suffragettes is from Moss Side, Caroline Aherne, The Smiths, Oasis, Sir Alex Ferguson- the list goes on!

This is just a small part of a very long list of reasons that we should all stop and celebrate the beautiful Manchester. Everyone has their own personal reasons why they love this city, and after a difficult year, Manchester has shown just how resilient both the city and its people are.
