Albert’s Schloss has brought a sophisticated New York vibe to their Bavarian Bier Palace underneath the iconic Albert Hall on Peter Street – and Viva loves it.
Sophistication in the “Life is a Cabaret” meaning of the word as Baby Grand Slam features dancers dressed in top hats and tails, with fishnet tights and heavy eye make-up, like Liza Minnelli as Sally Bowles.
But not so sophisticated that you are not going to be afraid to join in the hedonistic live entertainment when two duelling pianists play your requests and the dancers jump on the tables.
This is live jukebox, backed by the Schloss Haus band, when you can dance in front of the stage or belt out the tunes from your seat, waving your arms in the air. Just don’t forget to write those requests on the beer mats and drop them in the fish bowl.
We were invited to the launch and started our evening on the sturdy long rustic wood benches and tables with cocktails and a wonderfully satisfying meal – wild mushroom and roast butternut strudel, chicken schnitzel, Alpine sformato (baked truffled mash potato with cheese) and the charred broccoli.
When the curtains went back there was Alice Gasson and Sam Parry on the duelling pianos, and the dancers jump on the tables.
Albert’s Schloss have a roster of talented pianists and between them have toured and worked with artists from Bruce Springsteen to Jamie Cullum or performed in touring musical theatre like ‘Blues Brothers Live’ Beams Jenna G (Albert’s Schloss resident and first lady of Drum and Bass).
Their resident musicians have supported, and starred alongside the likes of Chase & Status, Hacienda Classical, Jenna & The Gs, Salutation Dub and Jeramiah Ferrari.
Albert’s Schloss also won Manchester’s Bar of the year 2017 and ‘Best Destination venue’ in the UK.
One of the things we loved was that there was a real mixture of ages and a relaxed atmosphere. Some people were suited and booted and looked like they may have come in large groups straight from work. But there were also couples singing songs to each other and mates dancing wherever they could find a space.
Baby Grand Slam takes place every Wednesday and on 12 April it will be Penny Nicholls and Tom Seals duelling on the pianos. We can’t wait!
