Britain’s Got Talent winner Tokio Myers sells-out two nights at the Albert Hall

Lee-Antony Bennett | 22nd April 2018

Taking to the stage for the second leg of his Manchester tour dates, Tokio Myers performed perfectly symphonized percussion, rhythm’s and electronic beats

Albeit a brief performance of just over an hour, Tokio Myers broke down the boundaries of traditional music stylings as he took to the stage with a standing ovation from his fans.

Performing a set unlike anything I’d seen before, the multi-instrumentalist demonstrated precisely why he is a deserving winner of ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent.

The audience were captivated with his musical renditions, which provided equal measures of emotion and empowerment, making use of the set-design and visuals to create a full-circle artistic performance.

The Albert Hall was rife with tenderness as on-screen visuals created a narrative for his renditions, one piece promoting positivity with the use of encouraging messages, while another visualised the past degradation of black people, highlighting how much the worlds views on race have changed, and the hardships and struggles that people of colour have faced.

Myers navigated the stage with high-energy and purpose as he demonstrated his many talents through the use of several instruments, a demanding feat which he pulled off effortlessly.

While contrasting musical soundwaves travelled through theair at the Albert Hall, it was clear that Tokio Myers is much more than a one-man band. His compositions are creating a whole new movement in music – and it was a beautiful experience to witness, and one which I would happily repeat over, and over again.

A thoroughly enjoyable, one-of-a-kind experience.

After catapulting to fame off the back of winning ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent in 2017, Myers has encapsulated the nation with his unique and innovative musical medleys combining classical and contemporary genres including dance, hip-hop and soul. Taking his fans on an enticing audible journey.

Following the huge success of his debut album, Our Generation, which landed in the charts at #4 selling over 100,000 copies, Myers sold-out his original run of tour dates, including a further 7 following the initial release. And, due to phenomenal demand, later added another 6 shows to his April 2018 UK tour.

Before finding fame on BGT, Myers worked as a studio musician recording and touring with the likes of Amy Winehouse, The Police, Kanye West and Mr Hudson.

Talking about his music, Myers said:

“Instead of asking ‘Why?’, we should be saying: ‘Why not?’ That’s always been my attitude, from when I was a small kid. I don’t recognise those so-called boundaries. In music, you can do anything you want”
