Britney Spears celebrates iconic anniversary taking fans back to 1999

Jessica Ward | 14th January 2019

It’s 20 years since Britney’s iconic first studio album ‘Baby One More Time’ took the pop world by storm and now fans can go back in time to celebrate the anniversary of its release, a staggering two decades ago, on January 12, 1999.

Launching across the US today and now the UK, the Pop Princess is being honoured with ‘Britney OS ’99’ which recreates a Britney Spears fan’s computer desktop circa 1999 to interact with a virtual version of the iconic star.

Taking fans right back to the nineties, they use a retro messaging app and users can speak with a ‘Britney Bot’. They are also able to send GIFs, make calls and chat to create a shareable playlist that reflects their mood.

Users are rewarded with hidden exclusives, free content and a chance to win prizes by interacting with all areas of ‘Britney OS ’99’, such as the web browser or documents folder.

Creative technical agency Modern English, which has just completed projects for Dua Lipa, Mariah Carey, The Beatles and even Elvis in recent months, designed the site for New York based Legacy Recordings, the catalogue division of Sony Music Entertainment.

Modern English founder Andrew Hirst said: “Britney is one of the most iconic music artists of the last few decades and so it’s been an absolute honour to work on this project.  The retro design and feel of Britney OS’99 is something we think will really resonate with fans from that era. It’s like going back in time, while the chatbot tech and integration with streaming platforms is very current.  It’s huge fun and we’re very proud of it.”
