Is the cold weather making your skin and hair lifeless?

Caitlin Blackwell | 13th March 2018

With the gradual change of weather, it’s noticeably getting colder and colder by the day. Our skin and hair can become quite vulnerable to this. Personally, the cold air makes my skin and hair really dry – which is never fun!

This may be more relevant to people with skin conditions, as the weather often has an impact on people who have eczema for example.

We have 3 products that could help tackle the visits from Jack Frost. In addition, we have a product to tell you about which can get you involved with the latest teeth whitening craze.

First, we have the perfect tool to get rid of that dry and dull looking skin, with this silicone facial cleanser and exfoliating brush by SENSSE beauty.

A smart cleansing brush that combines thorough cleansing and anti-ageing in one device.

Each silicone bristle is kind and gentle to the skin yet effectively draws out any dirt and impurities for healthy-looking, glowing skin. Featuring a unique bristle pattern to follow the contours of the face for deep cleansing.

Do you have sensitive skin? Fear not! What makes this device so great, is that it has a button which causes a vibration. It also has small arrows which means you can increase or reduce the intensity – which sounds a bit strange, but it’s to ensure that the bristles are really cleaning the skin properly.

It doesn’t just come with the cleansing brush, it also comes with a gorgeous, pink glittery bag which is great for travelling and staying hygienic. The device itself would look like an ornament on the bathroom shelf with it being such a pretty baby pink colour and having rose gold detail.

Now for hair.

There’s nothing worse than leaving the house after styling your hair to find that it’s raining, or in recent cases snowing, knowing that all the effort into making it look nice will go out the window and will turn into a complete frizz ball instead.

Eco Cosmetics have a new styling range and from this range I tried out their mousse, which is said to be

certified natural by ECOCERT, is cruelty free and contains ingredients from organic farming where possible. It’s also suitable for vegans.

My first thought about this mousse was how smooth and light it is. Sometimes hair mousse can feel heavy and sticky and leaves a strange texture in your hair. However, this mousse was the opposite. I applied it to damp hair and it dissolved into it instantly and didn’t leave any sort of stickiness.

It also has a lovely pomegranate scent to it and has no strong chemical odour to it due to the pomegranate and goji berry ingredients added. Applying the mousse through the hair evenly to give it a hold, but shine at the same time.

The natural ingredients help to give your hair a nourishing boost. Goji Berry is known to improve hair strength, while added Pomegranate boosts moisture and prevents hair from feeling dry, which is perfect for this dull weather.

Throughout the day my hair stayed wavy, which doesn’t happen when I don’t put any product in it.

It’s a known fact that people who suffer with skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema that the weather has can have a huge impact on it. The heat when it’s hot can cause inflammation and itchiness, and the cold can to the same by making the skin dry and dull.

Not scratching something that feels so itchy is almost impossible, and with that being a side effect to eczema and psoriasis, scratching it can lead to scarring and making it more inflamed – even spreading it on the body.

My best friend has eczema and my boyfriend has mild psoriasis on his leg which they both noticed seem to flare up a bit when the weather went bitter cold.

My friend gets eczema on her elbows, and I introduced her to Suu Balm,  an itch relief moisturiser, specially developed for people with dry, itchy or eczema-prone skin. While Suu Balm sits within the medicated skin category, it is a terrific moisturiser.

My boyfriend was the first to use it for his psoriasis, which had gone a bit red. He applied it before going to sleep and the first thing he noticed was that it felt really cold and minty, like a peppermint cream. This is because it includes menthol. It really helped the itching as that cold, soothing feeling was such a contrast to the itching, he could feel the itch.

Similarly with my friend with eczema who used it on her elbow who described it in exactly the same way, however she said it stung a bit.

It claims to work in less than five minutes, to which they both said it felt cold and soothing within that time.

The weather may not impact the colour of our teeth, however there has been a recent craze with the use of charcoal. There’s charcoal face washes, charcoal face masks, charcoal soaps and the popular charcoal teeth whitener.

I personally had a bad experience with teeth whitening powder, after I bought a cheap one from Groupon. After persistent use, I saw little difference in my teeth and they became very sensitive which made me feel sceptical about trying different products.

I tried JANINA Ultrawhite, which has a natural formula, is 100% cruelty free and vegan. The formula is very potent as it is able to whiten up to seven shades without compromising the sensitivity of the enamel of the teeth, which is what the last product I tried did. With this in mind, I was very excited and keen to try this product out.

The first thing I noticed was that the pot of charcoal clay powder was filled to the very top and both of the tooth paste tubes were big.

The charcoal powder was a bit messy to use, as you had to empty some of the product into your hand and not dip it straight into the pot, but nothing that a splash of water wouldn’t wash away. After using it for a week along side the toothpaste, I noticed a slight difference in my two bottom teeth, which is good for only a weeks use.

The toothpastes did different things. One is called Activated Charcoal, which makes the toothpaste grey, so in some ways it’s less intense that the clay, but it’s convenient as it’s already in the toothpaste. The other product was called Ultra-White Whitening toothpaste which after using it, made my teeth feel squeaky clean – I tend to use this one more often as I already use the charcoal clay, therefore instead of using a toothpaste with more charcoal in it, I wanted to use something without it too.

Overall, it takes patience to see results, but it’s not worth buying a cheap charcoal clay and receive no results when you can buy this range.
