CHESHIRE: Copster Green’s hidden gem Yu reveals its culinary secrets

With multiple accolades under their belt, Victor Yu and his father Charlie Yu have been dishing out high end Chinese cuisine for the past 13 years.

 

Set in the outskirts of Blackburn nestled into the Lancashire countryside, Yu Copster Green are known for traditional Chinese cuisine using only the finest ingredients.

 

Over the years Victor and Charlie have worked with a number of Michelin star chefs, and even piqued the interest of Gordon Ramsay, earning them the title of best Chinese restaurant in his hit TV show, Ramsay’s best restaurant.

 

We decided to give them a go and to see what all the hype was about.

Our starters consisted of a range of traditional Chinese dim sum delights including sui-mai and har-gau, made fresh and prepared on-site. Duck spring rolls which were by far the best we had ever tasted. Packed full of succulent duck, the ratio of duck to pancake was spot on.

 

Victor prepared for us chicken wrapped in bamboo leaves which had been marinated in a special sauce full of Chinese spices and honey which was full of flavour and simply divine. The bamboo leaves were then deep fried, protecting the marinated chicken and steaming the meat beautifully.

 

As we waited for our main courses to arrive, we tried out some of the cocktails Yu had to offer. Each cocktail on the menu has been given a Chinese makeover. We opted for the lychee martini and as we felt a bit fancy, the lychee bellini. Both are cocktails which we highly recommend. The sweet and acidic flavours of the lychee complemented the champagne of the bellini perfectly.

Our main courses were served promptly. The dish which stood out the most for us was of course, the black cod. Marinated for 3 days in a miso sauce the cod was cooked perfectly and melted in the mouth. The sweet coating of the marinade slightly crisped the sides of the cod with an excellent flavour.

 

The half lobster with ginger and spring onion was another dish that had been given the Yu treatment. The lobster was wok fried and sealed in all the unique Chinese flavours of this fabulous dish.

 

Finally, the fillet steak in Cantonese sauce was brought to our table, straight out the kitchen on a sizzling hot plate. The steak was incredibly juicy, another traditional Chinese dish cooked well.

 

Throughout the evening the staff were extremely friendly and attentive and were more than happy to cater to our every need. More importantly, the staff showed personality, something which tends to go a miss in most restaurants these days. They were more than happy to chat with us and even crack a joke here and there.

VIVA Verdict: Overall, our experience in Yu Copster Green exceeded our expectations. From the exquisite décor to the unique craftmanship of each dish, and the friendly faces of each of our servers, Yu certainly did not disappoint.
