Coronation Street stars Catherine Tyldesley and Katie McGlynn swap the Weatherfield cobbles for some hardcore workouts ahead of a brutal 35-mile charity trek.

The pair, who play Eva Price and Sinead Tinker in the hit soap, were put through their paces  in a series of muscle building exercises ahead of TrekFest, where thousands of people walk cross country through the Brecon Beacons in Wales – all for good causes.

Elite personal Trainers from Manchester’s Ultimate Performance gym at Old Granada Studios,  showed them ‘the ropes’ as they were forced to flip giant tyres and  pull weighted sleds on ropes, as part of a special strength and endurance training programme called ‘Vikings & Valkyries’.

Taking part alongside friends and family as part of ‘#TeamVital’, the stars have chosen to raise funds for The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity based in Manchester, and Parkinson’s UK.

Catherine said: “I’m passionate about completing TrekFest. Our team will train hard to make a respectable time, and raise much needed funds for both charities” While Katie added: “I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in to the challenge. I have been told this certainly isn’t going to be a walk in the park!”

The Brecon Beacons offer a beautiful setting for TrekFest, which is organised by Global Adventure Challenges, and provide an extreme physical workout and a psychologically taxing challenge. Participants will cross the highest peaks in the Beacons and South Wales including Pen Y Fan (886m), Corn Du (873m), Cribyn (795m) and Fan Y Big (719m).

Mum of Joshua Wilson aka SuperJosh and co-founder of The Joshua Wilson Brain Tumour Charity, Dawn Fidler said: “When we were told  that #TeamVital  had chosen us as their local charity I was thrilled. What they are doing to raise funds is amazing and will be a huge boost to allow us to continue giving direct support to children with brain tumours and post surgery disabilities across Greater Manchester. The whole of the SuperJosh family is 100% behind them and we hope they have a lot of fun along the way!”

Paul Jackson-Clark, Director of Fundraising at Parkinson’s UK, said: “We are so excited to hear that Parkinson’s UK is going to be involved with this amazing challenge. Our Welsh colleagues in particular are jumping up and down in anticipation, and it will be fantastic to be able to highlight the great work that we do across the UK. We can’t thank ‘#TeamVital’ enough for their support”.

Managing Director and co-founder of Global Adventure Challenges, Peter Robinson, said: “We are delighted that the ladies have chosen to take part in TrekFest. With the numbers growing year on year is has now become one of our leading events. Although 50km is a pretty tough challenge that will test the girls’ endurance to the full, it is highly achievable with the right training.”
