Former Boxer Jamie Moore Takes On The Great North Run With A Little Help From Dorset Orthopaedic

VIVA Ems | 5th September 2017

Former boxer Jamie Moore from Salford suffered serious nerve damage in his left foot after a tragic case of mistaken identity resulted in him being shot three times in his hip and legs by a masked gunman whilst he was working in Spain in 2014. Jamie was the innocent victim of a horrible act of violence during a visit to Spain to train his friend and former opponent Matthew Macklin.

Originally told by his doctor that he would never run again, determined and tenacious Jamie set his mind to restoring his fitness and activity levels in spite of his injuries. He even made a bet that one day he would once again do the Great North Run.

As a patient of Dorset Orthopaedic’s Midlands Clinic in Burton-on-Trent, Jamie worked closely with his orthotist, Graham Dunn to find the best possible solution to enable him to complete this notoriously challenging sporting venture. Graham suggested that Jamie should try a new and improved Silicone Ankle Foot Orthosis, known as a SAFO®. The SAFO is a revolutionary product designed to help people suffering from walking difficulties caused by drop foot, as a result of a traumatic injury or a neurological condition. The SAFO provides a new found sense of confidence by improving balance and correcting foot placement.

Jamie will tackle the 13.1 mile Great North Run course wearing his custom-designed Dorset Orthopaedic SAFO featuring a Union Jack design on 10th September 2017. The SAFO provides side to side stability as well as aiding ground clearance, resulting in a lower risk of falling. While Jamie can walk without assistance, the increased demands of running together with the increasing levels of fatigue mean that the SAFO is required to prevent the pains that Jamie had experienced without the device. The intimate fit and reinforcements that run down the top of the foot and ankle provide the required stability and positioning of his foot during running.

Jamie will be raising money for Niamh’s Next Step, a charity dedicated to funding research programmes into the childhood cancer, neuroblastoma. His JustGiving page can be found here: https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jamiemoore7
