GIG REVIEW: The Winachi Tribe at The Live Room Manchester, 30 January 2016

IMG_3575It’s a cold stormy January night in Manchester and I’m braving the elements to photograph the genre surfing twelve legged Groove Machine ‘The Winachi Tribe’. A band that are close to my heart. I’ve been their photographer and friend for the last four years and have watched them develop from the ramshackle loveable rogues of China White into the highly polished Tribesmen of ‘Winachi’.

Manchester’s newest venue ‘The Live Room’ is buzzing tonight, a venue that has a slight underground warehouse feel to it. The crowd is high in anticipation for the live music that awaits them. Also on the bill is the electro pop band ‘Ordnance’ from Sheffield and the hotly tipped indie dance band ‘Slow Readers Club’ who both perform strong, assured sets which really get the crowd hyped up and moving and grooving. But it’s ‘The Winachi Tribe’ I’m here to see. They have a look and sound that seems to set them apart from the current crop of new bands coming out of Manchester. A mix of Funk, Electro, Hip Hop with a dash of Rock N Roll thrown in for good measure. There’s a confidence and power to the band’s live set that at times can be mesmerizing. You can’t help feel you’re witnessing a band that could be on the verge of something extremely special. The army of loyal fans that is growing throughout the UK would seem to prove that I’m not the only one who feels this way. The band performs a ten-song set and leave the crowd chomping at the bit for more. With dates coming in thick and fast and a number of festival’s to announce this summer, 2016 is set to be a massive year for the tribe of Winachi.
