GotSome on Boomtown: “The art of the stages and production are amazing; as a raver and DJ to have all of that together is the pinnacle”

It’s a glorious sunny day across the UK, but DJ, Adam Gorsky, AKA GotSome, reveals he’s stuck in a dark box, or better known as the studio.
After supporting both DJ EZ and My Nu Leng at the start of this year, GotSome has already garnered up a fair few slots with the big names.
VIVA chatted to Adam about GotSome’s music and his plans for Boomtown Fair…

What have you been up to at the moment?

I’ve just been locked in a dark box writing music, that’s literally my life! I’ve probably been doing this since around Christmas I imagine. I’ve got lots of new music coming up so that’s what’s been going on really. I’ve been trying to get all the new stuff ready for the summer; that’s the key.

What do you enjoy about playing a gig in Manchester?

Where can I start, I love it! Everyone is so passionate about raving! It’s a bit like Bristol really. I’ve been coming to and playing in Manchester for years now for events at Gorilla, Warehouse Project, Parklife, Albert Hall a few times but I just absolutely love Manchester and all the love!

Even the smaller gigs are amazing; I actually prefer them because you can be more in touch with the crowd instead of playing in a massive room where you can’t see anyone.

How old were you when you first got into music?

I got my first pair of decks when I was 17. I’d been obsessed with hip-hop from as early as I can remember because hip-hop, jungle and drum and bass were really big in the late 90’s. Especially being from Bristol, it’s in our blood and is part of our culture so from a young age music has had a huge influence on us so for me it felt natural.

When I was about 15, quite a few of my friends got turn tables and they were teaching me about Biggie Smalls and stuff like that. My friend then taught me how to do doubles, you know like in hip-hop where you do the doubles and scratching, and then I became obsessed!

I was working at a supermarket at the time and I worked solidly for a whole summer to afford these technics and from then I spent all of my money on records and then I started DJ’ing.

What’s been the most memorable experiences of your career so far?

Just travelling and playing your music across the world is amazing. It’s also amazing when you travel to other countries and they’ve heard of your music. Certain tunes that you’d forgot you’d made are really popular in their country, and you’re like ‘oh my gosh!’ Music really travels.

I haven’t got a pinnacle gig because there has been so many, but I think that is one of the eye openers for me.

How would you describe your sets?

It’s kind of going through changes at the minute but they were very bass driven and there are lots of references to where I come from with the hip-hop and drum and bass. Now they’re going slightly more house and a little bit more American but keeping the Bristol element in there.

What’s going on with Boomtown fair this year?

I’ve started a new alias this year which is also playing at Boomtown. It’s called Boeke and that’s me and a guy called Eli Brown. I’ll be playing two sets; Boeke, which is more tribal and between Bali Funk and Techno on the Thursday, and then I’m playing at Bang Hai towers as Gotsome on the Sunday.

I played at Boomtown two years ago at Sector 6 and I loved it; it’s absolutely crazy! What I like about it is the art of the stages and the production; it’s amazing. For me as a raver and a DJ to have all of that together is pinnacle. I also love how it’s not a commercial festival, it’s totally mad there.

What advice would you give to someone going to Boomtown for the first time?

Go with an open mind and also look after yourself. Drink lots of water and take sun cream with you!
