Cool or classic, bronzed or black, you can re-style this beauty classic, paring it back and making it your own for SS16…

The smokey eye. Traditional, timeless and totally beautiful. A celeb fave for rocking down the red carpet, a popular Saturday night going out choice and big with top designers. From Julian MacDonald to Issa and Erdem, bespoke smokey eyes were one of the top trends of the season, doing their sultry, pretty thing all over the (catwalk) show. And the best thing about the SS16 smokey eye? You can make it your own. Styling out a bespoke creation using different colours, textures and techniques.

If you heart a twist on the old school smokey start by working Mac Fluidline in Black Track, £16, onto the soft part of the lid and beneath the lower lash line using a stiff eyeshadow brush. Next, using a fluffy shadow brush, buff the pure black out towards the socket line and just to where your lashes end underneath connecting all your smoky work at the inner and outer corners too. Next, roll Avon Supershock Gel Eyeliner Pencil in Blackout, £6, inside the water line, pausing if you think your peepers are going to water, and giving yourself a moment. Add lashings of mascara and false lashes to balance out this statement smokey.

Coppers and bronzes can also work a treat when it comes to freestyling your smokey. Plus using powders gives another kind of depth to the look and it’s a little more low maintenance compared to its darker smokey eye sister. Try blending together Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Sin, Midnight Cowgirl and Half Baked, £14 each, keeping the colour strong on the lids and underneath the lashes, then softening it away to nothing as you get to the outer areas. Black liner and lashes would be too harsh here, so instead try golds and browns. Add dewy, real skin kind of base and nude lip to both looks and you’re good to style out your smokey.
