Members club

A new co-working space is opening in central Manchester. Department of Coffee and Social Affairs is set to launch its first, members only, co-working space.

The concept of the space is to combine all of the great aspects of a coffee shop, whilst functioning as a working environment.

The coffee house began in London, back in December 2010 and has since opened nineteen stores over the UK, with one in the US. This base is the first in the North of England and is the largest site yet. Ashley Lopez, the CEO, exclaimed that they chose Manchester because the city had “all the great parts of London, in a place where everyone smiles”.

Membership can be paid daily, monthly or annually – with the daily price starting at £25. More details can be found on their website.

Members will receive discounts on coffee and food, whilst having access to printing facilities, mail handling service and lockers.

It is essentially a homebase to work away from home, a platform to grow a business or a space to study at a price that doesn’t break the bank.

Department of Coffee and Social Affairs not only serves award winning coffee, but simultaneously works alongside local and national charities; hence the reference to ‘Social Affairs’ title. The company is involved with an abundance of humanitarian work. One example is the Afri-CAN charity, that works to alleviate poverty and hunger, improve education, provide skills training, and provide employment in Sub-Saharan Africa.

I attended the launch party to check out the work space and of course, try out their expertly sourced coffee.

Walking through the door, I was hit with the incredible smell of coffee beans. On arrival, there was a selection of beverages to choose from; opting for a glass of prosecco, I was later offered to try one of their signature espresso martinis – which did not disappoint. All of the members of staff were extremely welcoming; offering around trays of delicious canapes and making sure everyone’s questions were answered.

The interior was beautiful and really did feel like a home away from home as it had a very cosy vibe to it. It has a striking look too, as the entire space is surrounded by glass walls. There is a vast array of lovely sofas and pastel coloured chairs dotted around the room, with private booths and huge desks to work from. A member of staff also pointed out that each working space has a service button, so you can order food and coffee to your desk simply at the push of a buzzer!

A membership would be ideal for those who need a space to work away from home. Entrepreneurs, freelance workers and students would definitely benefit from the members club.
