Britain’s first Brexit documentary comes to Bolton on Valentine’s Day

Leave or remain? That momentous little phrase from 2016 caused a nation-wide division, encouraged the questioning of our national identity and resulted in Brexitannia.

Timothy George Kelly’s ruminating feature-length documentary about Brexit will be shown at Bolton’s Light Cinema on Wednesday 14 February at 7.30pm.

The screening will also feature a Q&A session with director Kelly and local Bolton resident and participant in the film Ibby.

Brexitannia explores the fundamental concepts of this momentous moment in British history, by capturing the eclectic voices of 50 of the leavers and remainers from across the UK.

It delves into a minefield of social realism, racism, ignorance, neoliberalism, elitism and identity politics- illustrated through Kelly’s meticulous black-and-white cinematography. An aspect of the film that paints the concept of the importance of human nuances, as opposed to fancy edits and heavy political insights.

Director Timothy George Kelly explains: ‘’We tried to follow actual statistical demographics of the country to attempt a truthful as possible portrait of the nation. I consider the film more a study of humans than of politics.”

The documentary ends with rather sobering insights and analyses from Noam Chomsky, Saskia Sassen and Nick Srnicek.
