Meet Quirky Indie Girl Band: The Big Moon

Megan Storey | 31st May 2016

big moon 2The second day of Sound City in Liverpool saw indie girl band The Big Moon playing The North Stage. I grabbed a quick chat with 2 of the quirky Londoners, Fern Ford (drummer) and Celia Archer (bassist) before they hit the stage.

What acts are you looking forward to seeing today?

C: We’re going to see Shura in a bit and we just caught the end of INHEAVEN. Circa Waves and really interested to see Pete Doherty.

How did the band form?

F: It started off with just me and Juliette (guitarist), we knew the same people but had never met. And so she wanted to start a band and I was doing nothing so we just agreed to meet up and we liked each other. We messed about and it was really fun, so started to find other band members. Eventually we found Soph (guitar, vocals). Then Celia. Then that was it – that was the band.

Where do you get your songwriting inspiration?

C: You’re asking the wrong people! Jules is our songwriter. She just writes about everything, like very strange things and very normal things.

F: She can take the most mundane things and write a song about them, to the point where you think it’s about this profound thing.

C: She’s currently writing one about the Megabus so I’m really excited to see how that turns out!

Who influences you?

C: Well we all like quite different things. There are lots of other bands that are around at the moment that we like, like Spring King and Yak and The Sea – guys like that make you want to raise your game!

F: We’re a very different band but we come together and turns out this is what we sound like when we combine all these different things.

What’s it like touring with a group of girls?

C: This particular group of girls is good! It’s really great touring with my friends and musicians that I really love playing with and respect.

So do you argue?

F: No, if anyone is in a mood you can vibe it and the best response is to just let them crack on with it and they’ll apologise later. And when I say “they”…I mean me. Physically being on tour is like the Big Brother House, but on wheels and with less dramatic personalities.

Where in the world would you most like to do a gig?

C: There’s this festival in America called Sasquatch which I really want to do, apparently it’s beautiful and the scenery is amazing.

F: There’s this place called Red Rocks, which is like an amphitheatre built into the Colorado rocks and there’s like a tunnel that runs from the mixing decks to the back of the stage and every band that’s ever played has signed the tunnel.

What do you like to do when you’re not performing?

F: I like to build stuff. If I want a table, I won’t buy it I’ll make it.

C: Erm…go to the pub? No, I really like watching cartoons, and…crosswords, I love doing crosswords!

Who are your style icons?

F: These girls are pretty stylish.

C: Yeah I was thinking the other girls in the band.
