Next Year’s Hair Trend Revealed… And More!

Reuben Wood Creative Studio is Manchester’s fashion-forward hair salon and we’re always looking to be ahead of the next big hair trend from the world of high fashion and art. But let’s face facts; some of the most cutting edge hair designs aren’t the most practical for daily wear.

In this blog Senior Colourist, Gerrard Reilly talks about his favourite techniques and trends, as well as how we take the seasons biggest trends and turn them into gorgeous wearable hair with a touch of personality…

What’s your favourite colour technique?

My favourite colour technique, and by far the one I get asked to do the most, is Balayage. It’s a freehand colouring technique and translates from the French meaning ‘sweeping’ or ‘to sweep’. I love it because it gives a super natural, low maintenance look but is more bespoke than other highlighting techniques.

Balayage works with all skin tones and is suitable for most hair lengths except very short, cropped styles, and leaves you with a strong and modern look full of natural gloss and shine.

My current favourite Balayage is the Bronde – a gorgeous blending of blonde and brown tones (think Olivia Palermo and Jessica Alba). It’s perfect for those with darker hair who want to lift to a lighter colour, without a daunting full colour change.

What’s your favourite hair trend from the past?

I absolutely adore the famous flipped Farah Fawcett look from the 1970’s. Celebrity hair stylist Allen Edwards created it and I still get asked for it over 40 years later. It oozes cool and is super-sexy but it remains a relatively casual, textured messy look at the same time – think “cool girl hair”.

Tell us your forecast for the next big trend in hair colour for 2018 and beyond…

Recently its all been about cool silvers and icy greys but these more high maintenance fashion colours are definitely on their way out.

I predict warm, golden, pearly tones will be the next big trend. This trend is making a massive impact amongst the celebrities and on the catwalks, which I feel I’m bringing it into focus.

Reds are also making a comeback with lots of gorgeous autumnal auburn, copper and brown multi-tonal high-shine healthy heads everywhere! I’m certainly going to be incorporating these into my repertoire in 2018 blending warm, grown out roots with bronde (brown/blonde) ends creating lived-in, effortlessly beautiful hair.
