Review: Jarrod Dickenson and Don McLean at Bridgewater Hall

Adina Pogor | 11th June 2018

On May 7th, American singer-songwriter Don McLean and his band performed at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.

I admit, I felt a little out of place when he came on stage and did his set and the reason was because of the age gap between me and the other people there. However, by the end of his performance, when he sang his well-known 1971 song, “American Pie”, and almost the whole room stood up and started dancing and singing, I finally understood. Music is happiness and memories and I felt like every single in that room who stood and danced along to Don McLean that night had their own memories with his music and maybe, just maybe it has helped them in some way along the way.

Don McLean’s opening act was singer-songwriter Jarrod Dickenson. Jarrod was accompanied by his wife, Claire, and together they managed to warm up the crowd’s souls when the sun on that day only managed to warm their bodies. Singing songs like “Faint of heart”, “Take it from me”, and “Your heart belongs to me”, from Jarrod’s newest album, ‘Ready the Horses’, Jarrod and Claire made us feel like time has frozen and is speeding by at the same time, that by the time they were finished with their set you’d have wished for more.

Jarrod Dickenson might be a small artist in the industry, but he’s one to look out for. With a strong voice and a story in every song he sings, he can easily steal the hearts of the people.
