Smilepod’s Hygienist, Samantha Ackerman, gives natural easy tips to keep your pearly whites bright.

  1. Certain citrus fruits can be detrimental to teeth. If you drink from a straw, it limits the amount of time your teeth are in contact with sugar and citrus. Both of these elements can cause dental decay and cavities so it gives an extra layer of protection.
  2. Invest in an electric toothbrush – Both manual and electric toothbrushes are effective if used correctly, but it is generally easier to do a good job and remove all of the plaque effectively from the teeth with an electric brush
  3. Brushing should be twice a day with a good fluoride toothpaste to remove any plaque and build up and excesses from the day.
  4. Spit don’t rinse – to get the benefits out of your fluoride toothpaste you should not rinse with water when you brush, instead just spit out the excess and allow the rest to remain on the teeth and do it’s job.
  5. You know those little inexpensive interdental brushes with the ridged edges? Genius. Interdental cleaning is essential to clean the areas your toothbrush cannot reach. Interdental brushes or floss should be part of your daily routine. If you are not sure how, your Smilepod hygienist will be happy to show you in your appointment
  6. Limit sugar – sugary food and drinks cause decay in the teeth and should be limited as much as possible.
  7. Cut out tobacco. Tobacco use whether smoking, chewing or sheesha carries numerous health risks and greatly increases the risk of gum disease and oral cancer. A lot of the damage is completely reversible once you quit.
  8. Attend regularly for both checkups and hygiene appointments, we will advise you how often you should be coming in. Keep up with the recommended recalls to maintain excellent dental health and brush twice a day.
