Ten City-Break Destinations To Make Your Pound Go Further

SAM | 4th October 2017

New research reveals that starry-eyed sightseers looking for a European escape could save up to £600 by heading East.

A long weekend to the Eurozone can be three times more expensive than a similar trip to Eastern Europe, according to travel money specialists No1 Currency.

Its researchers found that wise weekenders could save almost £600 by choosing Sofia over Reykjavik.

Nordic countries are famously pricey. A weekend in Reykjavik will set you back £878 – a whopping three times more than a trip to Sofia in Bulgaria (£283) – where each day spent in the Icelandic capital is five times more expensive than a day in Moscow (£40).

Although Eastern European cities have long been cheaper than those in the West, the fall of the Pound against the Euro has widened the gap.

British travellers who are willing to look beyond the Eurozone’s usual suspects could save hundreds of Pounds on a three-day trip.

If value is your priority, try choosing vodka over vin rouge – a mini-break in Poland (£306) is nearly half the price of a weekend in Paris (£586). And while Paris has a romantic reputation, lovers could save £100 a day roaming around Roses Park in Romania instead.

Both known for their clubbing and culture – and boats and bikes – a trip to Amsterdam (£578) will cost you double a trip to Bucharest
(£305).

With its bunting, bands and bars, the buzz of Bucharest makes it a strong rival to Amsterdam’s legendary nightlife.

One of the cheapest capitals to enjoy a weekend of eating, drinking and sightseeing is Moscow. A day in Madrid (£128) is triple the price of a day in Moscow (£40) so try swapping paella for pirozhki to make your money go further.
