SAM | 29th May 2018

When it comes to booking flights, we all want to know how to get the cheapest airfares. And, when travelling with several family members or a group of friends at the same time, then the cost of travelling to your holiday destination can certainly add up.

If you’ve yet to book your family holiday for summer, or you’re just about to, then you might want to hold off a little longer.

Research from online travel agent Opodo reveals that booking six weeks ahead your departure date is the ideal time to get the best deals on airfares and by doing so you could save as much as 50%.

Its annual flight price index looked at return flights departing from Manchester and other airports across the UK to all destinations.

The study reveals the lowest prices available 42 days in advance of departure, while prices for last minute flights tend to spike seven days before departure. This figure is the average saving compared to cost of airfare during the rest of the year.

The optimal time to book long-haul flights appears to be in September and those opting for domestic routes in the UK should book in October for the lowest prices.

The best day of the week to make a booking has also been revealed. Purchasing flights on a Sunday is likely to offer the cheapest rates for domestic travel, while long haul flights are best booked on a Tuesday while Wednesdays are best for short haul.

You can use Opodo’s free to use online tool where users can find the cheapest average price of a flight from Manchester depending on the time of year you wish to travel.
