In celebration of the iconic David Bowie, this issue’s images are inspired by the creative genius himself.

Make-up is an art, as are fashion, music and many other influences and, just for fun or perhaps as an

accolade to the late inventor himself, why not re-invent yourself – if only for one night?

GIRL

6X7A2923-2Make-up doesn’t have to be neat. It’s about being free to be yourself so go all out and show your mood with eccentric embellishments.

Use an eyelash glue to add beads, sequins and other adornments to your face or apply glitter using a cream base for it to stick to. Ensure your foundation is flawless underneath with the perfect amount of coverage.

When I think about David Bowie the blue and red lightening bolt spring to mind, hence the colour theme. Reds and blues are great for looks that stand out and, used together, can create a clashing palette that really works. Choose the texture carefully. Sheen is easier to wear than matte but, either way with such brights, there will always be a nod to the seventies and eighties. Give definition where it’s needed by opting for a bright blusher you can use on the eyes, cheeks and contours.

Contouring is currently the biggest mainstream trend. It’s been around for decades and was a favourite with Bowie.Contouring palettes are easy to use. Pick out darker tones to sweep into sunken areas of the face and use highlighting tones on the highest parts of the face that you want to stand out; such as the cheekbones, corners of the eye, brow bones and under-eye area.

BOY

6X7A3004-2Bowie demonstrated that men can wear make-up and still be cool. You can either be blatant or blend it out so it’s barely there. A contour powder swept into the hollows of your cheeks and blended down towards the chin gives a defined jawline. Surely that’s got to be worth a go, guys?

Guyliner draws attention to the eyes and can appear as little more than a shadow if applied correctly. Use a really soft kohl and apply lightly around the eye before smudging it in and almost taking it back off again.

  • Product used: Bobbi Brown Eyeliner, £18.50
