CHESHIRE: VIVA celebrates Diwali with Indian delights from Bombay to Mumbai

In the vibrant village of Bramhall, lies Bombay to Mumbai, a hidden gem featuring traditional dishes from the heart of India. With a 1st place ranking on Trip Advisor, beating out 650 restaurants in Stockport and listed in the 2019 Good Food Guide, we simply had to pay them a visit.

Bombay to Mumbai is run by Sandeep and his business partner Donya. Both are passionate foodies with Indian culture and tradition in their hearts, as well as our hosts for the evening.

To get a true sense of Bombay to Mumbai and after advising on how much spice we thought we could handle, we put our trust in Sandeep as he took the reigns and chose each dish for our table. This is something I would highly recommend, especially if you have never experienced Indian street food before – you won’t find a korma or vindaloo on this menu, this is proper Indian grub!

Donya was in charge of drinks, she brought us a fabulous selection of cocktails and mocktails from a Bombay Dhamaka cocktail, fueled with rum and served in a fuel canister style mug to the Gulabo mocktail flavoured with Rose.

We began our street food feast with a variety of the Mumbai street starters. This featured the Masala Dosa – a crispy Indian pancake packed with mashed masala potatoes, a Samosa Chaat – samosa topped with yogurt, chaat salad, sweet, spicy & tangy chutneys, Rumta Jogi – lamb kofta tossed in masala sauce & spiced rum, and a sharing platter with a variety of unique pastry, chutneys, vegetables and spices.

After a short break, it was onto the main event. This consisted of Lamb Chamku which was phenomenal and won the majority vote of best dish of the evening. The Lamb Chamku is a medium spiced semi-dry curry cooked with garlic & beetroot chutney. The vegetarian option consisted of Dal Tadka, lentils tempered with aromatic spices.

For the spice lovers amongst us, we were given the Chicken Kolhapuri a fiery chicken curry from a place known for its spices, which gave off an immediate heat. We also had the Lamb Staff Curry, a ferocious coconut-based curry which was more of a slow burn. Both curries were delicious and although both dishes had us sweating, we couldn’t help but eat more, the richness of the flavours combined with the heat were simply divine.

For a palette cleanser and a cooling aid to the heat of the spices we were given a Baraf Gola which is Crushed ice flavoured with refreshing syrups – we opted for Orange, Rose and Indian Blackberry. If you like your curries on the hot and spicy side, this palette cleanser is something we would highly recommend.

VIVA Verdict: Bombay to Mumbai gave us an experience we will never forget and broadened our horizons on not only the food but the culture of India. With fantastic service and attention to detail, Bombay to Mumbai is well worth a visit!
