Vicki Igbokwe: The Headwrap Diaries will be performed as part of “Dance: Sampled” at The Lowry

“Dance: Sampled” is coming back to the Lowry with a day of activities and events celebrating dance’s diversity.

On Saturday 17 February, the Lowry will host another edition of the one-day dance festival aimed at making dance accessible to everyone, with free workshops and affordable performances.

“Dance: Sampled” gives participants the opportunity to experience dance first-hand, with taster-classes running throughout the day, for all ages and abilities. The wide range of activities includes an introduction to Flamenco with live music, as well as Salsa, Tap, Hip Hop, Ceilidh and Lindy Hop classes.

Visitors will also be able to watch performances by the trendiest artists of the moment.

The shows will feature an eclectic selection of sampled pieces from all horizons, ranging from an extract of Scottish Ballet’s Nutcracker to 60 seconds of Hip Hop by Far from the Norm, and a juggling act by Gandini’s Juggling. Talents to look out for include flamenco virtuoso Jesús Carmona and BBC Young Dancer 2017 winner Nafisah Baba.

Nafisah Baba will be performing at the Lowry for “Dance: Sampled”

Also on stage will be Vicki Igbokwe: The Headwrap Diaries, a fusion of club styles and African and contemporary dance, and a duet from Sibilo, choreographed by Sophie Laplane.

Julia Fawcett OBE, chief executive of The Lowry, said: “As the home of dance in the North West, it is a pleasure to host Sampled. It is a wonderful celebration of dance that offers visitors of all abilities a unique opportunity to trial a new style and could perhaps be the inspiration behind learning a new skill.”

Simply walking around the Lowry is likely to become a special experience in itself – with Bhangracize dancers performing on the plaza and animations going on in the Lowry’s foyer spaces.
