From Monday 27th– Friday 31st July, the British and Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) Manchester will host its first ever Summer School, giving aspiring musicians the opportunity to commit to an intensely productive week of learning and practice in their chosen instrument.

The special guests are a crucial part of the Summer School appeal. Professional musicians join the classes to guide the students’ progress and share tips for performance, confidence, instrumental technique and more.

Manchester is looking forward to welcoming Republica vocalist Saffron to work on Vocals, while Charlie Laffer, guitarist for Maverick Sabre, will share his skills with the Guitar classes. Bass players will be joined by multi-instrumentalist Tim Muddiman, bassist for Gary Numan and namesake member of Tim Muddiman and The Strange. Finally, for Drumming duties we welcome to Manchester, Jason Bowld, drummer with the hugely influential UK band Killing Joke.

The first Manchester Performance Summer School will focus on Indie Music and will follow the established BIMM Summer School format, running daily from 10am to 4pm for five days. Mornings are given over to technique and rehearsals, while in the afternoons the different instrumental groups come together and form practice bands to flesh out the songs they have learned. Although the age range for the summer schools is generally 13-18 years old, the schools are open to children aged 10 years and above and cost £299 for the week.

BIMM Manchester debuts their first summer school Monday 27th– Friday 31st July.

The intense week builds the musicians’ skill-set and confidence by selecting more complex material as the week progresses. By Friday, students are ready to perform their live finale for invited friends and family.

BIMM Brighton Head of Performance, Kieron Pepper, who has had a successful and diverse career himself, including worldwide live performances with The Prodigy as their live drummer from 1997 to 2007,  is looking forward to getting the Manchester Summer School ball rolling: “I’m so excited to be bringing the BIMM Summer School to Manchester this year, with some world-class guests and five days spent working on styles, technique and performance with budding musicians from the local area and beyond.”

It’s a terrific line-up for the inaugural BIMM Manchester Summer School, which has seen the likes of stars George Ezra, James Bay and Brit-Award winner Tom Odell graduate from the courses it has to offer, and is hopefully the first of many more!
