REVIEWED: The synth king Gary Numan at the Bridgewater Hall

Gary Numan at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester

I remember seeing Gary Numan on Top of the Pops back in the seventies with his neatly combed hair, fresh faced and black eyeliner standing stoically behind his synthesiser cranking out ‘Cars’ with that unique voice of his.

A lot has happened to Gary Numan since then, when he lost favour with the masses and his career seemed to come to a halt. I was never a big fan of his music when he came on the scene, however several decades later his music is bigger and better than ever and his live show is one not to miss. The years have not stopped him from moving around the stage like a teenager, contorting himself in different poses while singing some of the best and edgiest music around today.

The look is strait out of Star Wars desert scenes which the graphics at the back of the stage confirm. The music from his most recent album ‘Savage’ and previous album ‘Splinter’ are very filmic in production and can be imagined as part of any Scifi movie. The fact that he also has the amazing Skaparis Orchestra backing his show together with his usual band adds significantly to the overall performance.

If you’re new to Gary Numan music I urge you to check him out and catch one of his gigs.. A great performer with beautifully crafted music to boot.
