Gemma Atkinson has wheelie good time in Sainsbury’s for Sport Relief

Chloe Rowland | 24th February 2018

Emmerdale actress, former Strictly Come Dancing star and Key 103 breakfast show presenter Gemma Atkinson, cha-cha’d her way through Sainsbury’s in a dazzling routine with a shopping trolley in front of unsuspecting shoppers.

The stunt, which took place in the Ashton Moss store this week, was all in support of this year’s Sport Relief campaign- challenging the nation to beat a billion steps a day, every day from 17-23 March 2018, using the brand-new Sports Relief app to track their progress.

Gemma, who is also a breakfast presenter on Manchester’s Key 103 radio station, was paired with Sainsbury’s colleague Lee Mottershead, 23 from Ashton-under-Lyne, where they danced together inside the store, then let loose in the car park- ditching her dance partner for the unusual choice of a Sainsbury’s shopping trolley.

Lee stated: “I wasn’t expecting to be dancing when I came into work today, least of all with Gemma Atkinson! We do something for Sport Relief in store every year, but nothing quite like this. It’s been really fun, Gemma was a great dance partner.”

Whilst ranking up her steps with the app, Gemma was also modelling the new Sport Relief merchandise- which is available now in Sainsbury’s stores and online, with at least 50 percent of every sale going to Sport Relief.

She stated: “Dancing with a trolley is not as easy as it might look! There were a few near misses, but I had a lot of fun. I hope today has shown just how easy it is to get active, raise money and change lives this Sport Relief.

“So, on your next trip to Sainsbury’s, cha-cha down those aisles to pick up your Sport Relief merchandise and look the part doing your steps.”

Since 2002, Sport Relief has raised over £335 million, bringing the nation together to get active, all whilst raising money to change lives.

The money raised by the public during Sport Relief week will be spent by the UK charity, Comic Relief,  to tackle the critical issues affecting people across the UK and the world, aiming to create a world free from poverty – where everyone is safe, healthy, educated and empowered.

Rachel Carrington, Sponsorship Manager at Sainsbury’s said: “We’ve been proud partners of Sport Relief for many years. In 2016, Sainsbury’s colleagues and customers raised over £7 million, making a huge difference to those in need. We’re hoping that our efforts this year will make an even bigger difference and are delighted to have Gemma on board to give this year’s campaign the extra push.”
