Happy PIF Day! The 28th of April is a day of sharing, caring and smalls acts of kindness for nothing in return. Paying It Forward (PIF) is a movement based on this very concept, and today you are encouraged to give something back. Be it baking a lasagne for your family, buying a lottery ticket for the local man and his dog, or simply complimenting your barista on the quality of her coffee.

To get things going, Le Pain Quotidien has decided to join the party. In what is the first restaurant social experiment of its kind in London, LPQ is spearheading the PIF campaign across its 26 London stores, welcoming customers to take part in its trial performing random acts of kindness with redeemable gift cards.

And to make things even more charitable, they’ve struck a partnership with national charity, FoodCycle – creators of nutritious meals made from surplus food for people at risk of food poverty and social isolation – and are donating £5 to FoodCycle for every baking masterclass purchased via PIF.

It’s true that London is often perceived as a dog eat dog kind of place, but wouldn’t it be something if we could change that in some way? Sandi Mann, leading psychologist and author of the book: “Paying It Forward: How One Cup of Coffee Could Change the World”, has said random acts of kindness can be met with suspicion from people living in London, and is an advocate for movements such as PIF:

“This is natural for city dwellers who are used to fighting for resources rather than sharing them. I hope that campaigns like this demonstrate that even in London, there are kind people who are acting with no ulterior motive other than the desire to be nice!

“It’s fantastic to see leading industry brands such as Le Pain Quotidien getting behind this kindness initiative which will hopefully encourage an onward domino effect of doing a good deed.”

Head down to your local LPQ today and be a part of their experiment in making London a happier place to be!
