Girls That Mix
| 11th May 2015
If we’d have said name your favourite DJ a few years back, people like David Guetta or Avicii may have come to mind. However there’s a new rise on the DJ scene and it’s nothing to do with a change in music.
In an industry once dominated by men, proving that they can rise to the occasion and spin some decks too, women who DJ are on the rise; bringing style and class to hot new mixes and tracks.
One of our favourite female DJs of all time is Lisa Lashes, the electronic dance music DJ who’s mixed numerous Euphoria tracks and is the first and only female to get into the Top Ten DJs in the world nominated by DJ Magazine.
So let’s take a look at some of our local girls that can mix! VIVA caught up with DJ H, Lorna Bancroft and VIVA Ems, three girls who are becoming familiar and favourite names on the DJ scene in Manchester. . .
Name: Helen Holt – Dj H
Style of music you DJ: I’m really into music and have a very eclectic taste from Indy/RnB to 80s classics! At the moment in Manchester the niche market for me is house and RnB, fitting in with the whereabouts and social scenes I play at. I am very lucky to have a lot of close connections in the industry stateside which keeps me up to date with the latest new releases before they hit the UK.
Most played tune on your iPod: At the moment “simple things” by Miguel
Favourite DJ: I like a lot of Djs, so hard to choose a favourite.. I have met Richie Hawtin and David Guetta. They are both really nice guys. Richie combines his music and tastes when hosting a night at the renowned Space in Ibiza. He tailors the whole night and experience into his passions and his life outside of DJing and I like that as it’s like an invite into his personal life not just his music.
Biggest DJ achievement so far: Yet to achieve this but I am made up to be represented for my DJing by Vital and hopefully I will become good enough to get warm up acts for big artists and be able to travel internationally working for festivals globally, that’s my dream.
Dream gig: COACHELLA!!
Name: Lorna Bancroft from Heart Breakfast.
Style of music you DJ: Contempory Hit Music.
Most played tune on your iPod: At the moment it’s Uptown Funk, Mark Ronson & Bruno Mars.
Favourite DJ: Obviously my co-presenter Joel Ross.
Biggest DJ achievement so far: I’ve done a job I LOVE for thirteen years!
Dream gig: I’d love to work at Glastonbury, it’s such a legendary festival.
Name: VIVA Ems
Style of music you DJ: Sexy soulful deep house and a bit of funky disco.
Most played tune on your iPod: I’ve got two little beauties I can’t get enough off at the moment: ‘Bringing Back The House’ by Delgado & Rowetta, ‘What You Do’ by CJay Swayne & Jurno feat. Sarah Hart.
Favourite DJ: Howard Marks & Vince Vega. They both helped launched my DJ career, gave me lots of amazing advice, let me DJ with them at festivals and believed in me, I love them for all of that plus they both have the best music collections which I have raided haha.
Biggest DJ achievement so far: Being warm up DJ for Brandon Block, Fun Lovin Criminals and Pussycat Doll Kimberly Wyatt,, plus I’m a little bit excited to be on the line up for Parklife and Bestival this year.
Dream gig Headline spot on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury with all my friends and family dancing on stage with me.
