It is very rare you find a musician who is so heavily involved in the writing and production of their songs. It’s even more rare to find a musician who proposes to their girlfriend in their music video. We chatted to Andy Brown, the ever so romantic and lead singer from Lawson.

So what have you guys been up to in the past year?

“We’ve been on tour, we’ve been to America and we’ve done a full tour with Robbie Williams in Australia which was cool. Then just getting ready for the release of our new album Perspective which is out on the 8th of July.”

How do you think your music style has evolved since you formed?

I think we’ve just got that little bit older basically, you know as we’ve got older our music styles just got a bit more mature. I don’t think it’s too different, we still just write pop tunes that are sort of honest, you know? It’s basically just a little bit more mature music I’d say.”

Have you always wanted to be a musician when you were younger? Or was there any other career you wanted to go in to?

Yeah, I mean I learnt to play guitar when I was like ten, so I mean that’s always what I wanted to do. Either that or a footballer but I wasn’t quite good enough for a footballer so I had to decide on being a musician really *laughs* which I suppose was an amazing career choice.”

What’s been the highlight and lowlight of your career so far?

Probably just playing sold out shows in America and we also headlined amazing venues in the UK and Asia, so I’d say doing sold out gigs all over the world. There hasn’t really been any bad parts to be honest. It’s all been amazing. We’ve been very lucky to have been on the journey we’ve been on, so you know I’m just hoping it continues for as long as possible really.”

Do you write your own lyrics yourself? And is it from real life experiences?

“Yeah exactly, I write all the lyrics myself. I think it’d be difficult for me to sing if I hadn’t wrote them myself. So yeah I write all the lyrics myself, all the songs as well myself. That’s always been the way I’ve done it, I think that’s the best way to sort of talk about your experiences you know through your own experiences really.”

Yeah definitely, so what’s your favourite song in the whole world?

“Favourite Lawson song?”

No doesn’t need to be Lawson, just your favourite song, like your go to song.

“Okay, ermm that’s a tough question. I’d probably pick an old song to be honest, probably something like, More Than Words by Extreme. Yeah, that’s probably one of my favourite songs.”

That’s one of my favourites! So what’s your favourite Lawson song you’ve ever written and performed?

“Probably a song on the new album, err no on the latest EP we’ve just released called We Are Kings. That’d probably be my favourite song that I’ve ever written I think.”

If you could describe Lawson in three words what would they be?

“I would say, erm oh god, I would say honest, sort of epic and err I don’t know. Honest epic and triumphant, let’s go with triumphant.”

Good words, so are you more of a shower singer or a car singer? Or both?

“You know what, neither.”

Neither?

“Because I live in a flat, the last time I sang in the shower I got shouted at by the neighbours *laughs* so I can’t do that anymore. And in the car, I don’t tend to sing too much really, but I would say I used to be a shower singer but no I’m not allowed to anymore.”

That’s funny, so how did it feel proposing to your girlfriend in the new video, was she surprised or did she have a clue?

“Yeah it was amazing, she obviously had no idea, so it was a really amazing moment really because you know we’d planned it and stuff for a while and then we did it. So she was really, really shocked and it was such a good way to do it because now we’ll have that memory now for the rest of our lives.”

Yeah and you’ll be able to watch it back now as well.

“It was really cool doing it that way.”

Did you manage getting it in one take or did it take a few times?

“Yeah it had to be one take because there’s no way we could’ve acted that again because there’s no way we could’ve pretended to act it once we knew it was coming, it would’ve been too obvious.  So yeah we just had to get it in one take, but I think we managed to do okay.”

Yeah it looked really, really good.

“It was really cool, quite emotional.”

Definitely, so do you think Lawson will perform at your wedding?

“Maybe yeah. I spoke to the lads about that and they said they’d be keen so yeah we’ll have to see but I definitely think why not. You know we can have a little bit of a party and all that, it’s be great.”

That’s cool. So have you got any festivals booked for this summer? Are you going anywhere?

“Yeah we’re doing a few festivals, we’ve got lots of stuff booked in over the summer. Lots of places all over really. We did a lot of the big festivals like V Festival and T In The Park last year and you look on lawsonofficial.com you can find all of the gigs we’re playing on there.”

And what’s next for Lawson? Can we expect like a tour in the next year?

“Absolutely yeah, we’ll be doing a tour at the end of the year when the album comes out. Depending on how many we sell we will decide on how many venues and the size of venues and stuff like that, so it’s exciting and we’re really looking forward to it.”

Lawson’s new album Perspective is out Friday the 8th July.
