Manchester has been officially announced as the seventh most pub populated city in Britain, with nine watering holes per square mile, according to Liberty Games.

“Alongside Liberty Games, we analysed over 50,000 pubs to establish the true pub capital of Britain and work out which cities have the most pubs per square mile. The results may shock you, too…” said, Digital PR Executive at Aira, Aliyah.

Ranking top of the list is Portsmouth with an impressive 12 pubs per square mile. This is almost double the amount of pubs in London , and three extra pubs per square mile in comparison to Portsmouth’s neighbour, Southhampton.

Closing the other end of the spectrum is the Scottish district of Highland, with a low average of .0003 pubs per square mile, according to the gathered data.

Aliyah added: “To work out the number of pubs per square mile in each location we used Get The Data’s list of pubs (derived from the Food Standard Agency’s Food Hygiene Ratings and the ONS Postcode Directory) and area data for council districts. Each pub featured in the list was assigned to a district based on their registered address. The number of pubs for each district was then divided by the total area to work out the number of pubs, on average, per square mile.”

The rest of the list is as follows:
Portsmouth – 12 pubs per square mile
Liverpool – 11 per square mile
Bristol – 10 per square mile
Brighton and Hove – 10 per square mile
Norwich – 10 per square mile
Dundee – 9 per square mile
Manchester – 9 per square mile
Nottingham – 9 per square mile
Southampton – 9 per square mile
Dudley – 8 per square mile
