Mastered:Fit, the new fitness app backed by boxer Crolla

WHILST Mancunian boxer Anthony Crolla might have lost out to rival Jorge Linares last night, he remains one of the shining talents in British sport. Viva caught up with the team behind Mastered:Fit, the personal training app that Crolla sponsors.

The thesis behind the app is this: everyone wants a personal trainer. Whether to shed some pounds or go for the full-Anthony Joshua shredded look, it’s always handy to be pushed that little bit further. Unfortunaely, whilst athletes and film stars might have the cash to splash on this, most people don’t. In fact, as personal trainer behind much of Mastered:Fit’s content, Shaq Whittaker, tells me “95% of people can’t afford a personal trainer – that’s who we’re reaching out to.”

Shaq is one of the most well known personal trainers in the North West, having trained a range of celebrities.

“I was approached by an old friend to put together the content for the app,” he tells us.

“This included the training and the nutritional formulas, which devises tailored programs for certain circumstances.”

Shaq says he sees a lot of rookie errors in the gym which are holding dedicated people back.

“A lot of people don’t know what they’re doing in the gym, so this is designed to help – this is the indirect way of approaching the people that I can’t physically reach out to myself. The worst thing is a bad dead lift – it bugs me! I hate pestering people, I’d rather them just be able to see the proper technique on the app and improve.”

You notice a quick change in certain exercises when using the app. The personal trainer tells us that peoples squatting technique improves almost immediately – which leads to more gains and less frustration.

“Many movements are linked to the squat, so once that’s fixed you see progression improvements.

Crolla is the biggest athlete backing the app and Shaq reveals that he has been incredibly gracious to work with:

“He’s been with us from the start, he’ll do anything we need. I love his attacking style, he’s not afraid, he’ll go straight into it and he’s entertaining to watch!”
