These are the nations top 50 home comforts

SAM | 1st February 2019

Having the heating set just right, a cup of tea – and their beloved sofa are among the nation’s favourite home comforts, according to a survey.

The study found photos of loved ones, reliable broadband and your own toilet also appeared in the top 50 list.

The smell of clean clothes reminds people of being at home, along with a comfy pair of slippers and scented candles.

One in five also have a favoured mug they use when they want a homely feeling.

A spokesperson for Europe Holiday Inn & Staybridge Suites which commissioned the study, said: “There’s nothing better than the feeling you get when you’re at home.”

“With the average person making four trips for work a year, we want to provide them with all the amenities they need to stay as comfortably as possible while they’re away from home.”

Other top-ranking home comforts include the particular smell our houses have, as well as home-cooked meals and a good book.

A well-stocked fridge, your own bed and your laptop or tablet also featured in the list.

The study also found more than three quarters of Brits admit to missing some of their home comforts when they’re away – either for business or leisure.

And on average, it takes less than four days of a holiday for people to begin missing their favourite items they left behind.

Sixty-three per cent of respondents even bring things from home like teabags, dressing gowns and slippers to create a ‘home away from home’ feeling.

One in five also travel with their own pillow because they can’t bear to be separated from it even for one night.

The report also asked what hotels could do to make staying away homelier, with free Wi-Fi the most popular.

Hotel rooms with a living room space and a kettle, so they can make their own drinks at their leisure would also make their stay feel more like being at home.

A quarter of people polled complained that the biggest pet peeve when staying away from home is forgetting something they need.

A fifth begrudge having to eat out all the time as more than a third say eating out is extremely expensive.

Elisabeth Ditlbacher added: “At Staybridge Suites, we offer spacious suites with living rooms and with fully equipped kitchens to make a home cooked meal, on-site self-laundry facilities, complimentary food and drinks at The Evening Socials, and a 24-hour Pantry to pick up any necessities you may have left behind at home.”
