REEF – REVELATION at Engine Rooms

REEF at Engine Rooms, Southampton

A strange coincidence happened the other day when I was talking to a musician friend of mine who said had I heard of REEF. I had to admit that although I had heard of them I didn’t really know much about them or their music. He said they were epic, and knowing his taste in music I quickly got onto Spotify and tapped in their name. I listened to ‘Revelation’ from start to finish several times and their music just grew on me.

The coincidence is that at about the same time I got the opportunity to photograph REEF at Engine Rooms in Southampton. Now the Engine Rooms is not a large venue but it is an intimate place, in fact touching distance, so allows you to drink in the sound and energy of a band like REEF.

REEF are one cool band that seem to be happy in their own skins, pumping out tunes that first and foremost they love to play and aren’t too worried about what people think.

REEF released their new album ‘Revelation’ earlier in the year a full 18 years after their last and hence their current tour that was close to coming to the end. They played old as well as new and sounded as ‘in your face’ as you could get with Gary Stringer’s voice as hard as ever ably supported by Jack Bessant on bass( who could be Father Christmas in another life) and Jesse Wood (son of Ronnie) on guitar.

The crowd were loving it and and I have to say so did I. A band that had not really registered on my radar in the past had suddenly appeared and it was a nice surprise.

No doubt REEF will be out and about in the new year touring once again so be sure to keep an eye out for them and if you haven’t already listened to their new album ‘Revelation’ .. well it is and was for me.
