REVIEW: An evening at MasterChef winners WOOD Manchester

Tara O'Connell | 13th December 2017

WOOD Manchester is a fine dining restaurant opened by MasterChef winner Simon Wood. The contemporary establishment is located at Jack Rosenthal Street in Central Manchester.

Since the restaurant has opened we have heard nothing but excellent reviews, so we decided to go and give it a try.  Upon arrival we were warmly greeted, had our jackets taken, and sat down in a large trendy booth. The table was beautifully laid out – but despite being a fine dining restaurant, was very unpretentious.

We started off with a bottle of wine whilst looking through the menu. Our waiter, who was a credit to the restaurant, suggested a bottle of Albarino, a white wine from Spain. The wine was tasty and soon enough we were relaxed into the calm atmosphere the team had created.

The menu has a vast range of dishes to offer, and it makes the deciding what to go for incredibly difficult! Starters on offer include Wild Mushroom Ravioli or Carpaccio of Beef, sounds good right? Most starters are around £10 which is fair for the quality you get. The mains on offer all sounded exquisite, with one dish including chicken, chorizo, black olives, saffron and pimiento. Mains range from £16-£80 and include vegetarian options so there is something for everyone. You can find more out about them here.

You can also opt for a ‘Tasting Menu’, which is said to bring you through a journey of flavors. Having never been in the restaurant before, we decided to try this to get a true taste of Simon Woods talent. The waiter explained that we won’t know what dishes are coming, they just bring them out like a ‘mystery tour’. I found this to be a fantastic way to make dining a bit more exciting!

To accompany this our waiter suggested a wine flight, in which you get a small glass of wine with each dish to compliment the taste. We decided to share a wine flight and see what was in store.

Throughout our seven course menu we were blown away with delicious meats, mouthwatering vegetables and outstanding cheeses.

A highlight of the meal was the a mature cheddar, with a sort of caramelized onion spread on peppery crackers. This was one of the starter bites, but was easily one of the tastiest things ever! Following dishes included succulent venison and a mushroom soup bursting with flavors.

A part of the excitement of this menu is the mystery, so I do not want to give all of the juicy details away!

To try this menu, all you need to do is let the team know any dietary requirements beforehand.

All I will say is that I predict WOOD Manchester to be one of the most in demand eateries in town. The team were extremely knowledgeable and fun which added to the evening, complimented by stunning food and tasty wine. What’s not to love?

VIVA rates this a 4/5
