REVIEW: Casey – “Last time we played here there was probably… 15 people?”

Beckie Bold | 18th April 2018

Casey are a hardcore punk band from South Wales. They have been around since 2014 and are currently on their first ever headline tour around the UK. The band are very unique. Their music represents personal stories and issues from Toms life (vocalist).

The band were on Kerrang! Tour 2017 and were also nominated for ‘Best Breakthrough Band’ for heavy music awards 2017. Over the past two years, the band are really proving themselves and are successfully getting their music out there. They have recently released their new album ‘Where I Go When I Am Sleeping’ last month.

Casey played Satans Hollow, Manchester on 17/04/2018. Personally, I think the band can sell out bigger venues as they are definitely a growing band. The band’s fanbase is very loyal and is certainly energetic. Casey’s crowd were attempting to crowd surf in such a small space, however, they managed it. The passion between vocalist Tom and the crowd was immense. Hands in the air, throwing themselves forward to the beat and passionately shouting all song lyrics back to one another. It was a beautiful moment to witness.

“Last time we played here there was probably… 15 people?” said Tom, most people aware that the show was sold out. The crowd applauded, it was a proud moment for the band and the fans. “Your attention means everything to us so thank you.”

Casey live at Satans Hollow

I was very excited to be able to see the band live considering I had never seen them live before. I didn’t know what to expect but it all made sense when I got there.  The crowd were your stereotypical hardcore kids that came together as one. Your venue was Satans Hollow – which is dark and grunge. Everything perfectly came together and felt right.

The show was very early with doors opening at 6:00 pm. There were 3 support acts before Casey coming on at 8:30 which was 15 minutes earlier than expected. Casey then finished their set at around 9:15 pm. The venue is normally a bar on a Tuesday – hence the early start of the gig. “Anyone staying around for free bar after the gig? See you there.” I’m presuming Tom and the rest of Casey stuck around after.

Even though the show was sold out, there was enough space for everyone to walk around comfortably. It wasn’t too sweaty and the atmosphere was warm and friendly. Everyone was happy and excited. However, I really do feel like Casey are soon enough going to be packing out bigger venues. I had never seen such a loyal crowd and this was the smallest gig I have ever been too. I can’t wait to see Casey sell out larger venues in a few years, you can’t slate their fanbase.

Beckie VIVA and Tom (Vocalist)

The band played a fabulous set. Tom interacted with the crowd a lot and made everyone feel special and a part of the show. Where the rest of the band had fabulous stage awareness and moved around a lot – you could tell they were truly enjoying themselves and they were there to show fans and newbies what they had to give.

It was an incredible night, well done Casey for putting on such a beautiful show. No matter how much people love or hate hardcore music, the passion that this band produces can’t be faulted. There meaningful and relatable songs have an impact on many people and they are definitely a band to consider.

Considering the band are still at the stage where they can meet fans without getting mobbed, I went to meet Tom for a quick selfie at the merch stand. He was a lovely guy and I am very thankful I got the experience to meet and watch the band live. They lived up to the crowd’s expectations. I don’t think there is anything they could have done better performance wise.
