REVIEW: Mahalia at Soup Kitchen

Holly Harris | 14th November 2017

I was introduced to Mahalia’s music last Friday and instantly fell in love with it. After a weekend of listening to her tracks, I could not wait to see her perform.

She took to the stage at Soup Kitchen for her self titled UK and Ireland tour.

The intimate venue was a sell out. A crowd of cheers met the up-and-coming artist as she entered the stage in her glistening silver dress.

Mahalia signed to her label at the age of thirteen and has since been establishing herself in the music industry. She has supported the likes of Ed Sheeran and Emili Sandé and has worked with the producer behind Hotline Bling.

She held the attention of the entire room; serenading the crowd with her soft, acoustic R&B songs and stories of heartbreak and love.

A single bassist accompanied her on the stage, whilst she switched between an acoustic guitar and a small, pink keyboard.

Almost every track came with a back story, to which she shared with the crowd. It was a very raw, stripped down gig – which worked. It added to the intimacy and made you focus on the lyrics and the chilled out atmosphere of the venue.

She manages to take mundane, everyday life circumstances and turn them into beautiful lyrics. The final track, and her most popular single, Sober had the crowd singing along instantly. Written at the age of eighteen in her mums basement, the song contemplates the aftermath of drunk calling; forming an empowering message to her ex.

Encouraging everyone to join in on the chorus, she added “…or you can just stand there awkwardly.”

The show reflected her laid back, humorous attitude. Just before the gig wrapped up, she made a comment about how it really was going to be the last track and how she hates the convention of doing an encore.

Mahalia’s gig was a stand out to me. I don’t think I’ve ever been to a concert where the artist connects so well with the audience. She seemed genuinely grateful to be there and even made the effort to come out and meet everyone for photos at the end.

There is no doubt that Mahalia is one to watch. I’m excited to see how she progresses.
