Ten places you should visit in the UK and experience in 2019

SAM | 25th February 2019

If you don’t have the budget to travel abroad this year, the good news is there is still plenty to do in the UK, which does not cost anywhere near as much as trips to foreign countries. Here are 10 events or places you could visit and experience in the UK at some point in 2019.

Agriculture Show

Agricultural shows take place all across the UK in the summer and this is something you can enjoy with all the family. These events showcase the best of arts, crafts, food, livestock and rural activities and often are very affordable to enter. One of the most popular and renowned shows is the Great Yorkshire Show which takes place from 9-11 July in 2019. There are over 8500 animals on show with over 130,000 people expected to visit across the three days in Harrogate.

Ben Nevis

If it is a challenge you are looking for in 2019, Ben Nevis could be for you. It is one of the most iconic mountains in Europe. Ben Nevis is the highest mountain in the British Isles and takes on average four hours to climb to the top of it which not only will give you a great sense of accomplishment, it will offer a mind-blowing view. The climb should only be attempted if you are without any health difficulties and, if you require medical advice before doing so, speak you your GP.

Cheltenham Festival

The Cheltenham Festival is the biggest horse racing meeting in National Hunt Racing. Every March, thousands flock to the Cotswolds to see the best horses take each other on in their respective divisions. There are 28 races across four days, with the feature race being the Cheltenham Gold Cup which takes place on Friday, 15th March this year. If you are planning to go to the Festival and fancy a flutter, look out for all the great offers listed by Oddschecker on the meeting as you may be able to pick up a free bet if you are a new customer with many bookmakers.

FA Cup Final

One of the biggest days on the sporting calendar in the UK is the FA Cup final which takes place at Wembley Stadium in London. Although many would argue this competition has lost some of its sparkle in recent years, this game is still a special occasion for the two teams taking part. Last year Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 to lift the trophy in what was the 137th FA Cup final. The competition is well underway this year, therefore, you can follow all the action all the way to the final game in May.

Glastonbury

Glastonbury is arguably the biggest annual music festival to take place in the UK. The five-day festival attracts the biggest music artists from around the world including contemporary stars and legends of the industry. Most people who attend the festival camp out on the site, therefore, if you want the full experience, get yourself a tent and book a weekly ticket. The line-up for this year’s event has yet to be revealed but, if you love music, you are unlikely to be disappointed.

Loch Ness

Scotland’s Loch Ness is one of the most famous lochs in the world and it’s all down to the Scottish folklore surrounding the Loch Ness Monster. Now, if you choose to believe that inside this loch lives a monster by the name of Nessie, you will want to travel up to the Scottish Highlands with a pair of binoculars to try and catch of a glimpse of the creature yourself. At the very least, this is a beautiful part of the UK so you can enjoy some fantastic walks and views even if you don’t buy into Nessie’s existence inside the loch.

Open Championship

The Open Championship is the oldest golf major in the world as this tournament has taken place since 1860. The venue for the competition changes each year across a number of coastal venues. In 2019, it is the turn of Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland to host the world’s best players. Given what is at stake, this is unlike any other golf tournament in the world. The winner is announced as the Champion Golfer of the Year and adds their name to the history books just like Francesco Molinari did in 2018 when he came out on top at Carnoustie in Scotland. If you enjoy your golf, this is a must for you at some point in your life.

Stonehenge

Based in Wiltshire, Stonehenge is a world heritage site with the most famous part of the monument being the standing stones which date back to 3100BC. The stones are 13 feet high and weigh in the region of 25 tons each, therefore, they are quite striking visually. There is so much history from this region as it is thought the area could have been used as a burial ground as bones have been found there, which are from as early as 3000BC. If history is your thing, a visit to Stonehenge should be at the top of your list this year.

West End Theatre

You are never short of things to do in London and one of those is a visit to the West End to the theatre. There is something for everyone here with musicals, opera and children’s plays all on offer. Some of the best actors in their field perform in London’s West End which, along with New York’s Broadway, is considered to be the best you will find anywhere. The next time you are in the capital, book yourself in for a show as you are very unlikely to be disappointed.

Wimbledon

Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world and also the most popular. As demand for tickets is so high, some fans camp out in the queue overnight just to guarantee themselves entry into the following day’s play. The competition is the only Grand Slam event that is played on grass and, keeping with tradition, all players must adhere to a strict dress code which requires them to wear white clothing. Last year Novak Djokovic defeated Kevin Anderson in straight sets to lift the trophy at SW19. If you are lucky enough to get tickets for Wimbledon later this year, don’t forget to enjoy a glass of Pimm’s and a punnet of strawberries, hopefully on a gloriously hot day. Don’t worry if it does rain though, as Centre Court now has a roof, therefore, even the weather can’t dampen your day there.

Be sure to make 2019 a year you will never forget with some unforgettable experiences.
