The Phenomenon Behind High Definition Brows

Jessica Dobbs | 15th March 2017

I can honestly say I have been through more eyebrow shapes than hot dinners, one day my eyebrows would be looking like slugs to the next-day looking nonexistent. My brows have unfortunately fell victim to being straighter than a ruler, (which you can see above) and having to accept that they will never be the natural shape I desire, well so I thought until I tried out this amazing HD (High Definition) treatment.

Before the treatment I never actually knew what I was doing when it came to brow make-up, I may as well have had my eyes closed they were that awful! And I was truly never able to grasp the talent of eyebrow make-up until a few months ago when I finally decided to get the HD treatment, an affordable action for those who can’t afford (like me) microblading or extensions, and it was the best decision I ever made for my crappy shaped looking brows.

Like everything we don’t like about ourselves, I just had stick at it, keep practicing, stopping and restarting again, until I finally mastered the trend of ‘fleeky’ brows. So, for those of you who have been through tough times when It comes to brows, fear no longer…here’s all the information you need behind HD treatment, because let’s be honest who hasn’t had eyebrow disasters?

Lois Byrne, a high definition brow stylist, who is based in Essex, is coming to the rescue to share her tips and tricks on how to get those brows ‘fleeky’ AF!

What step by step guide would you recommend on how to do make up for a brow with no natural shape?

The start of the brow should be lined up with the inner part of your nose. (A lot of artists start the brow from the outer part of the nose but I personally think that’s too far apart). The arch is the highest point of the brow; this should be lined up from the outer part of the nose through to the centre of the eye. The end of the brow should line up from the outer part of the nose through the outer corner of the eye. (See Picture)

What affordable brow make up what you recommend?

I personally have only used the High Definition Eye&Brow Palette which is £30 and the Anastasia Beverley Hills DipBrow which is £15. If I want a more natural look I’ll use the palette and if I want a bolder brow, I’ll use the dipbrow. The palettes are quite pricey but it will last you years – I have 3 palettes which I have had almost 2 years, one of them I use on my clients every single day and there is still loads left.

How often would you recommend plucking/shaping brows that have no natural shape?

I don’t recommend plucking your own eyebrows to any of my clients as it can be very easy to get carried away and taking out one wrong hair can make all the difference to the brow shape. But depending on how quickly your eyebrows grow, I recommend getting them done properly every 4-6 weeks.

Can you tell us what HD brows are and the average price?

HD consists of tinting, waxing, threading, tweezing and trimming. At the end of the treatment, I apply some makeup to the brows to show the client how the brows can look and the difference a little bit of makeup does. I’ll show them what I used and how and where I applied the products. The minimum price you’ll pay for actual High Definition brows by someone who is properly trained is £25 (tip: if you’re unsure as to whether someone is properly HD trained, take a look here and that will tell you all the HD Brow Artists nearest to you).

What tips and tricks do you recommend on how to do fleeky brows for a person with no natural shape?

The key to a good brow personally is to make it look as natural as possible. Using the HD Brow Palette and my step-by-step guide above, I apply the powder onto the brow and to cover any little gaps. I try to leave the top of the brow as natural as possible, I don’t always apply makeup there unless it’s needed. I also apply a bit of concealer under the brow to get them looking as sharp and neat as possible. It is better to use small amounts of the products and to build them up rather than over-apply as that can make them look slightly messy and over drawn.

Are there any affordable eyebrow semi-permanent treatments that could help enhance brows with no shape?

The only treatment on the market right now that is semi-permanent is tattooing/microblading – but this can be very pricey. You also have to take into consideration that you need to get them topped up regularly (failing to do so can result in things like them changing colour). I only think this is a good idea if there is little to no actual hair to work with. I always recommend having a few HD Brow treatments before considering tattooing, it is more affordable and you may be surprised by the results. If a client comes to me and says they want a thicker brow, I will leave them in certain areas to grow and gradually over time the shape and thickness tends to improve. Patience is key!
