It’s Time To Talk About Mental Health

Time To Change

Today is Time to Talk Day, a day that aims to encourage everyone to take 5 minutes to open up and talk about mental health.

Time to Talk is a campaign that first launched in 2014, taking place on the first Thursday of February. The campaign is ran by Time To Change, a social movement led by the mental health charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness.

The move is dedicated to changing the way people think and act about mental health. They work with workplaces, schools and within communities to break the silence surrounding mental health issues.

Around one in four people will experience a mental health problem this year and they believe that the shame and silence felt by those suffering can be just as bad as the problem itself. Yet, we just simply don’t want to talk about it. The movement aims to promote the message that there is no wrong place to talk about mental health. Just talking can play a huge part in the recovery of those who are feeling isolated.

What’s on in Manchester

There are events happening across Greater Manchester that you can get involved with. Manchester Mind is hosting a lunch break chat at the Zion Centre in Hulme between 10am and 3pm. Stockport Mind will also have information stalls in at the Olive Roc Cafe between 1:30 and 3pm and the Windmill Cafe between 11am and 1pm.

The easiest way to get involved is to take 5 minutes today to break the silence. Send a friend a text to ask them how they are, or have a chat with a co-worker on your lunch break. You can even Tweet using #timetotalk. Wherever you are today, it’s the right place to talk about mental health.

For more information about the movement and to find out what events are happening in your area visit the Time To Change website.
