WATCH: VIVA interviews superstar DJ Jax Jones

VIVA Team | 28th February 2019

Brit Award nominee, Jax Jones was in town over the weekend headlining at the VOXI House gig at Yes!

Artist, producer, singer, songwriter, DJ, remixer and self-taught multi- instrumentalist Jax is currently the #1 British Dance Export and one of the world’s most sought-after producers, having released 5 consecutive UK Hit Singles and achieved over 2 billion streams/15 million single sales.

VIVA got the chance to speak to him before his gig. He shared with us a few tales from the Brits earlier last week and also told us about his attachment to Manchester, our music and club scene.

The stand out performances on the night for Jax were Calvin Harris and local boys 1975. He partied with Mabel who he collaborated with last year on the hit song Ring Ring.

Asking if the Brit Award after parties are as legendary as we like to believe, Jax shared with us how he took a London Megabus from the arena to The Ned for the Universal after party with stars including; Sam Fender, Grace Carter and Greg James. At the party Mel C was DJing, last year Jax was on the decks. Having had more commercial success over the last twelve months, Jax said being more well-known meant he had more fun at this year’s awards. He spent most of the night with Sam Fender and mixed with fellow DJ’s Annie Mac and local lad Nick Grimshaw.

Talking about Manchester, Jax in fact had his first ever DJ set in Manchester in a techno club and he bombed. He still came back though and his fondness for our city grew. For a DJ he states The Warehouse Project as a pilgrimage.  In his early days he opened a night there and went onto headline Room two and then graduated to be main support with MK.

He said to us that you can feel the vibe as you walk around the city and that influence of dance music in particular is everywhere. In his words “What Manchester has done for dance music is insane!”

It’s not just the music as Jax also professes to be a bit of a foodie and he likes to have a wander round the Northern Quarter to check out the new bars and restaurants when in town.

Sunday night saw Jax headline at Yes! here in Manchester alongside British production trio Disciples. Jax was performing at the VOXI House event where he played a medley of his best tracks. VOXI, the mobile network, gives endless social media for under 30’s.

Have a look at some of the action from Sunday by watching the key highlights here:

Sunday evening’s VOXI House event was free for anyone who switched from their current phone network to VOXI – the mobile network that gives customers under 30 endless social media.

It’s straight into his tour this week which kicks off in Nottingham and he has a huge headline home gig at The Round House in London on the 6th April. It’s then off to the US to cities including Washington, Boston, San Francisco, home to one of his favourite record labels Dirty Bird.

We had to ask about dream collaborations – who would he love to work with? And it’s not just the big stars, Jax likes to work with new talent and hopefully help them to get more of the exposure they deserve. If he can be a part in helping unearth new talent – it’s a job well done in his mind.

With his Manchester gig being part of VOXI House, we had to ask Jax about his social media activity. He revealed that he does DM some of the Love Island crew including Alex. He follows stars that he has collaborated with including Mabel to see what they are up to and he likes to see what Calvin Harris is up to especially his gardening activities!
