Website Launched To Mark Manchester Being European City of Science 2016

A new dedicated website – manchestersciencecity.com, has been launched, which coincided with the 2015 British Science Festival which took place last week, to mark Manchester’s designation as European City of Science. The site will be the focal point of a year-long celebration of science, providing the public and industry professionals access to a range of science and technology related activities and information.
Sally MacDonald, Director, Museum of Science and Industry said: “The launch of this dedicated website is an important landmark in the citywide preparations for 2016 when Manchester steps into the global scientific spotlight as European City of Science. The website is the best place to discover more about the truly remarkable research and innovation happening across our city today – as well as the extraordinary contribution Manchester has made to scientific discovery over the last 250 years.

In 2016 the title of European City of Science comes to the UK for the first time. Manchester the city of Dalton, Rutherford and Turing will host a year-long celebration of science and innovation – the highlight being the EuroScience Open Forum 2016, Europe’s largest multi-disciplinary science meeting from 23 – 27 July 2016. Through this designation Manchester aims to increase interaction in science, technology, engineering, and maths subjects from the general public.
The year of European City of Science will officially launch with Manchester Science Festival 2015, running from 22 October – 1 November. Held annually, the festival is Manchester’s premier event for public engagement with science. Manchester will hold the title during the course of 2016 to its close at the Manchester Science Festival 2016.
‘Science as a Revolution’ is the overarching theme for the year and will create debate and exploration of the ways which science and technology constantly challenges the ways we think, act and how they transform our lives.
Working with partners across the city, the UK, Europe and globally, the European City of Science Team is developing an inspiring and extensive programme of conferences, educational events, business and cultural activities. The European City of Science designation is much more than the many activities which will make the city come alive with science, it is also a showcase ground-breaking science and cutting edge industry to a global audience.
Throughout the year, Manchester will come alive with science. Everyone will have lots of opportunities to take part in experiments, activities and conversations that bring science, technology and engineering to life. Many events will be free to attend and all will be listed on the ‘visit’ section of the website.
The designation is also encouragement to the already established industries within Manchester to hold events, talks and workshops to involve other academics, professionals and the general public.
Additionally, as the website develops, there will be a chance for everyone to collaborate with the European City of Science as it embraces the opportunity for members of the public and science and business communities to contribute their own thoughts and expertise in the form of articles, blogs and other content.
