“Great food, delicious drinks and good company” – Fizz Festival is in Didsbury next

The Cava Caves

The Fizz Festival has come to Manchester.  It was a booze and food infused delight that even the ‘beast from the east’ couldn’t ruin.

It was exactly how you’d expect a fizz festival to be; very sophisticated. Don’t let this put you off though because the people were ridiculously lovely and welcoming to first-timers, of which there were a few of us.

The highlight for me wasn’t just the bubbly cava but the unbelievably gorgeous venue. The venue was changed last minute to El Gato Negro. The place was beautiful.

Situated on a quaint street, El Gato Negro was filled to the brim with trinkets, including an antique looking globe, which really gave the place character. Not only that, we learnt that the roof opens during the summer making it the perfect rent out for a summer occasion or even a wedding!

The main attraction: the fizz and food

We tried six different types of Cava, which is a sparkling Spanish wine, throughout the night.

The first cava we tried was Anna de Codorniu Blanc de Blancs. This very fruity chardonnay type of cava was a great start to the evening.

Served alongside the cava’s were a whole selection of Spanish foods. First up were The smoked salmon palmiers, which were lovely too.

Straight after we tried the cava Cordorniu Cuvee Barcelona 1872 Brut which had a sharper taste to it, which I wasn’t particularly keen on, but smelt absolutely divine.

The Fizz!

We also had a selection of Spanish Meats which were nice but, as many Spanish meats are supposed to be, tasted very fatty. The Montenebro cheese tartlet with piquillo pepper I didn’t really try because I am not a fan of the cheese but, the sauce they were served in was very tasty and everybody else seemed to love them

The third drink, my favourite, was a very sweet cava that had something very different about it… it contained no alcohol! The fruity drink, Cordorniu Zero, really complimented the food and still had the signature bubbles. Nobody in the room guessed that it was non-alcoholic!

Up next was an organic drink, The Codorniu Ecologica Brut, which meant that no two bottles of the cava were the same. The ‘funky smelling’ glass went down a treat and was one of the favourites amongst our group.

Up next on the food menu were my personal favourites, the anchovy fillets on toast and Spiced Aubergine with lemon yoghurt and Lavosh bread.

Anchovy Fillets on Toast

I know anchovies are not everybody’s cup of tea but the salty taste of the fish on the toast and slight sauce went really well together. The aubergine dip and Lovosh bread was enjoyed by almost everybody there and was just delicious.

Finally, we had a drink that was completely made out of Pinot grapes. Reina Maria Cristina was the ‘finest’ drink thereby technical standards but was beaten hands down by the Cordorniu Ecologica which everybody took a fancy to.

The night at the fizz festival was truly a splendid night filled with great food, delicious drinks and good company, I’d encourage everyone to try an evening!
