Disco Diva Stacey Jackson became a protagonist for stay-at-home mums when she shot to fame, having launched her music career aged 40.
Following the chart success of her debut single, Stacey has gone on to release 4 albums & record a single with legendary rapper Snoop Dogg, as well as working with Papa Levi & prolific dance music producers & remixers.
Fitness plays a huge part in Stacey’s life. And now at 48, Stacey has launched her patented brand Staefit, an apparel line created with women’s workouts in mind, with an ‘at home’ exercise video encouraging women to be the best possible versions of themselves.
StaePumped Volume 3 is out now. The album is a mix of original tracks and covers – given the “Stacey” treatment – all remixed and immaculately strung together to create a 30-minute album of hi-energy dance music; equally perfect for a workout or a boogie in the kitchen with your kids.
All proceeds from downloads and all sales of her fitness brand StaeFit will go to the NHS to help the heroes working tirelessly to save our nation from the COVID-19
pandemic. Here, VIVA catches up with the Disco Diva to find out what is helping her to feel good right now.
How is lockdown for you? Who are you isolating with?
I’m quite the optimist and I always like to look for the “silver lining” when things get hairy or are out of my control. So to be honest I’m actually quite loving having my hubby and all four of my kids at home isolating with me. Flitting between the US and the UK has us all crossing paths a lot but being forced to stay put, slow down and enjoy each others company is actually quite nice.
Are you homeschooling?
Oh my God! Don’t get me started!
My university senior kid is currently doing his exams online from his bedroom and unfortunately won’t get a proper graduation or any of the fun bits that go with graduating from uni. My senior school kid who was meant to be doing his A-levels this year is “revising” even though they’ve cancelled A-level exams and my 13 year old is trying to cope with all of her lessons and I feel so badly because I know absolutely zippo about UK geography and I don’t speak a word of Spanish or Latin. The other day… my husband caught her jumping up and down in front of the computer and he said to her “Hey, what are you doing, I thought you had online school?” And she replied “I do, It’s P.E. now”.
What else have you been doing?
Now is the time to be super creative… so I’ve been writing more tunes — even collaborating over Facetime and Zoom, working on a big project at the moment. Just hard to be 100 percent focused with all the kids around me and if my hubby asks me “What’s for lunch?” one more time haha!! I have also been working out every single day — alternating between a run in the park or a HIIT session. It keeps me balanced and I feel so good after I exercise. And lastly, we also just got a puppy (which I must say is amazing timing and he is so much fun to have around!) so I’ve been going on long walks with him. I can’t believe how I became a dog person later on in life.
Are you baking banana bread?
My kids are doing a lot of baking to keep them occupied. I’ve been telling them that the quarantine calories are not going to be worth it in the end! That said, my vice is definitely quarantini hour! We always schedule in a Zoom call with family or friends around 6pm to catch up over a cocktail.
What’s your lockdown style?
Since stores are shut, I’ve been shopping in my closet and putting together outfits that are fun but comfy but cool. So long skirts with a t-shirt or a hoodie, cargo joggers and a tank top but always accessorising and of course wearing my heels — even around the house! Heels make me feel fab and forces me to keep my posture in check!
What are you missing/looking forward to when this is over?
If someone would have told me six months ago that I’d be in quarantine with a dog and that all the hair salons would be shut I’d have thought they were bonkers! So definitely a mani/pedi and a good blow dry!! And of course to get on a plane again (safely!) so I can visit my mom in Canada. It’s the longest stretch of time I’ve gone without seeing her so that’s on the top of my list.
