New 16-17 Savers card offers 50 percent off rail fares for teenagers

The new 16-17 Saver offers the highest ever discount on rail travel for young adults, which has goes on sale as of today.

 

This means that young adults and families could save £186 over a year. The news comes as rail bosses aims to simplify pricing on thousands on routes across the UK.

 

Tickets can be bought for travel on or after 2nd September 2019; customers can choose to have their 16-17 Saver on their phone or printed cards can be sent via post.

 

It is designed to help young adults expand their horizons and benefit from the opportunities travelling by train opens up, e.g. travelling to a new college for higher education.

 

Advantages also include being able to enjoy cheaper days out by train with their family, independently being able to explore Britain by rail with their friends or using the 16-17 Saver to travel to events.

 

Rail Minister Chris Heaton-Harris, said: “The brand-new Saver means that a generation of rail passengers can now benefit from cheaper fares, keeping money in their pocket and helping them get to school, college and work.

 

“We want to create a railway system that’s fit for the 21st century and provides a reliable, punctual journey.

 

“Through the Saver, the 26-30 Railcard and a record £48 billion investment in the railways, we are focused on providing passengers with the frequent, reliable and affordable journeys they deserve.”

 

Robert Nisbet, Director, Nations & Regions at Rail Delivery Group said: “Switching to a new college is a time of great change and brings new independence for young people. This new 16-17 Saver will offer real money saving benefits to 1.2 million 16 -17-year-olds and their families. Working together, the rail industry is committed to enabling more people to benefit from train travel.”

 

The new 16-17 Saver costs £30 and is valid for one year, or until the customer’s 18th birthday (whichever is earliest).

 

The 50% discount applies to standard Season, Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance tickets for travel on the National Rail network, except on ScotRail or Caledonian Sleeper services.
